The Cradlekeepers project began over a decade ago, when founder Shirley Stevens undertook a personal journey with her daughter, Cree, to find a lost cradleboard deeply meaningful to their family. Since that time, Shirley has received hundreds of cradles, each one often representing multiple generations of infants carried and family stories.
This project is a completely organic grassroots movement led by Indigenous Women, and it has blossomed into an archive worthy exhibition that touches families, communities and whole Nations. These cradles carried children, and now carry history, cultural revitalization, and communal memories.
The Cradleboard Collective is a testament to many things - the dedication and advocacy of women, the cultural legacies of motherhood and storytelling, and the powerful intersections of race, gender, and art.
